The 3D 5.5″ Dark Purple Foam Cutting Pad is the most aggressive of 3D’s three foam pads, made to take out swirls, scratches, water spots, and oxidation before you polish. It’s the first machine step after washing, drying, and claying. It’s sold as a single pad and also comes in 3.5″ and 6.5″ sizes.
Three Pads Cover Most Jobs
With so many pad types, sizes, and colors out there, picking pads can get confusing. 3D keeps it simple: for most people and most detailing jobs, you only need three pads. The Dark Purple is for cutting, the Light Purple is for polishing, and the Black is for finishing.

Use it with a 3D compound, such as 3D ACA 500 X-Tra Cut Compound, 3D ACA 510 Premium Rubbing Compound, or 3D AAT 501 Cutting Compound. Test a small section first to see how much cut the paint needs before you do the whole car.
When to Use the 5.5″ Dark Purple Foam Cutting Pad
In a multi-step job, it’s step one. Follow the Dark Purple Foam Cutting Pad with the 3D 5.5″ Light Purple Foam Pad to refine the finish, then the 3D 5.5″ Black Foam Finishing Pad for the final gloss.
It works on any polisher: rotary, long-stroke, short-stroke, free-spinning, and gear-driven (direct drive). Clean the pad between panels, since spent compound packed into the foam slows the cut and can mark the paint.
